Esperanza was a Mexican girl living in a wealthy family. Her family consisted of her Mama and Papa, Abuelita, and their close friends/servants Hortensia and Alfonso, and their son Miguel. When Esperanza's father dies, their money and home goes to Papa's brothers. One of his brothers, Tio Luis, wants to marry Mama. Mama doesn't want to. The family moves to California without Abuelita, because of her leg injury. In California, they find a camp to stay in for mostly poor Hispanics. One day in a dust storm, Mama catches a bad disease. Mama is in the hospital for months. When Mama is finally recovered, Esperanza is overjoyed. Miguel brings back Abuelita, and everybody is ecstatic.

Esperanza’s Papa was killed and gets robbed by some bandits the day before Esperanza’s birthday. At the funeral, the family learns that Papa gave all of his land to his Stepbrother Luis. He threatens Mama to marry him or sell their house to him. When Mama refuses, he burns the house down. The family decides to move to California with their servants for a chance at a new life but Esperanza’s Grandma can’t go because she was injured in the fire. Esperanza's dad was killed by some bandits and a rich person tried to make Esperanza's mother marry him by putting their house on fire and doing many other bad things. During the fire, Esperanza's grandma got hurt so they had to leave her behind when they left to live with their servant's family. When her mother and Esperanza arrived the family greeted her and they quickly bonded together. Later during a sandstorm, her mother got injured very bad so she had to go to the hospital. Later one of the servants went to get Esperanza's Grandmother. Then they live a happy life.
