Low Vision Program

The Low Vision Department helps educate clients about vision loss by giving them a better understanding of their eye condition.

First, clients have a Low Vision Assessment to help decide which classes will best suit their needs.

If an evaluation from our low vision specialist is needed Dr. Angela Kaplan, O. D., offers a comprehensive low vision evaluation at the VIP Center. She brings to the evaluation a wealth of experience and easy to understand explanations for clients who are frustrated about their vision loss.

Classes include:

• High Func (High Functioning Low Vision Clients): This class is a 5 week course encompassing

  • WK 1: “Dynamics of Vision Loss” - Self Advocacy Training
  • WK 2: “More than Magnifiers”- Non-Optical Devices
  • WK 3: “Magnification Explained”- Optical Devices
  • WK 4: “To CCTV or Not”- Assistive Technology Training
  • WK 5: “Teach the Brain to See”

• EVT (Eccentric Viewing Training): his class is an advanced 4 week course and cannot be taken without the prerequisite of “High Func” first.

  • WK 1: “Locate the best Area of Viewing”- non optical
  • WK 2: “Exercises to Strengthen Brain Eye Connection”
  • WK 3: “Concept of Moving Page”- teach students how to utilize their remaining vision for reading.
  • WK 4: “Piece Together”- educates clients on recreating their sense of detail vision.

These classes will teach you about your visual acuity, contrast, glare and lighting tips, how to use your remaining vision and many other valuable skills.

Training is available for:

  • Magnifiers, half eyes, high add prescriptions, telescopes, etc
  • Devices to help with contrast, glare and lighting
  • Electronic Magnification (closed circuit televisions)

From reading glasses, hand held illuminated or non-illuminated magnifiers, to Closed Circuit Televisions, the VIP Center has the most current assistive technology available. Come in, compare and evaluate different brands, types and models in a relaxed environment. Appointment required.
