Low Vision Program


The Low Vision Department at the VIP Center works to educate the visually impaired client about his/her vision loss through a series of programs that give “tools” to enhance visual functioning.  Although the eyes may not be repairable, learning techniques to enhance visual functioning is the key to success.

 

Classes include:

  • Assessment of low vision need includes:

      Evaluation of contrast, lighting and glare.
      Exploration of magnification: type, lighting, etc.
      Observation of how individual is using remaining vision.

  • Eccentric Viewing Training:  5 weeks (2 hour classes /one time per week)
    This class is geared toward the client with central vision loss.
    Clients will learn to look around scotoma (scar tissue) to locate PRL (best area of viewing in periphery).
    Clients will learn about specific eye diseases, how it effects visual functioning, and how to use magnification devices and other “tools” with techniques to enhance reading ability. 

 

  • Dynamics of Vision Loss:

      Teaches client about his/her specific eye disease, how it affects visual functioning, how environmental factors can diminish vision, the          importance of contrast lighting and glare, and why “bigger is not always better”.

 

  • Reading Enhancement Program, Assessing, Implementing, Reprogramming: (REPAIR)

       Client will build a “tool box” of information, assortment of adaptive aids, and techniques to enhance visual functioning in a variety of
       environments. 
       Clients will also learn to assess which tools should be used and when. 
       This class is open to all clients.

Other Services offered:

Optical aid and device training (how to properly use):

  • Hand held and stand magnifiers
  • Half eye glasses, microscope,, computer glasses
  • Telescopic lenses, telescopes
  • Electronic magnification

 

 If an evaluation from our low vision specialist is needed and clients do not have a current Optometrist, Dr. Angela Kaplan, O. D., offers a comprehensive low vision evaluation at the VIP Center. She brings to the evaluation a wealth of experience and easy to understand explanations for clients who are frustrated about their vision loss.

 

From reading glasses, hand held illuminated or non-illuminated magnifiers, to Closed Circuit Televisions, the VIP Center has the most current assistive technology available. Come in, compare and evaluate different brands, types and models in a relaxed environment. Appointment required.
