Assistive Technology
In the past several months a new mainstream technology device is being taught to visually impaired individuals that enables our client to access their email, a calendar, books, video magnifier, color identifier, money identifier talking calculator etc. all in one device and that is the iPad 2. Both our clients and staff are benefitting from the use of an iPad to access the Internet via a Wi-Fi connection conduct basic searches etc.
Currently we are working on creating a course that teaches our clients how to use and access the device despite their visual impairment by learning how to use and access the screen magnification program and screen reading program that are built in to the device at no extra cost.
As one of the fastest growing areas in our field the Computer Lab at the VIP Center is where you will learn how to apply adaptive software to your everyday computer use. Our lab is equipped state-of-the-art hardware and the latest adaptive technology. We offer a variety of classes for groups or individuals depending on the clients needs.
Courses Include Training in the following:
- Screen magnification software:
(ZoomText, Magic, etc.)
- Screen reading software: (J.A.W.S., Window Eyes, etc.)
- Optical Character Recognition (O.C.R): O.C.R is an adaptive technology software that converts text to speech. This software gives you access to the text off any printed materials including personal mail, menus, recipes, newspapers, etc. (The Breeze, S.A.R.A, etc)
- Stand alone GPS devices: (Trekker Breeze)
- Note Takers: This amazing device is basically a laptop for the blind or visually impaired. (available with or without refreshable Braille displays.
- Accessible media players for the blind:
Growing in popularity, these gadgets have all the tools of a mp3 player, digital recorder, etc and empowers those with blindness or vision loss to access to media files, book readers, text to speech capabilities and more.
- Cell Phones with accessible software: Learn how to use screen reading/ screen magnification software for your personal cell phone. Convenience you can take with you anywhere!
Computer Skills:
This course is offered for high functioning individuals that need minimal enhancements. Students will be taught how to adjust settings, such as screen resolutions, font type and size, mouse pointer enlargements and more.
Microsoft Office Training:
Excel
PowerPoint
Outlook
Word
Internet Explorer and email suites like Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, etc.
In addition to these software programs we also offer a wide range of Assistive Technology.
Knowledge of the computer keyboard is essential to your success.
Talking Typer, our keyboarding skills class, is a prerequisite for any of our computer training courses.
