Assistive Technology


The Computer Lab at the VIP Center is where you will learn how to apply adaptive software to your everyday computer use.  Our lab is equipped state-of-the-art hardware and the latest adaptive technology.  We offer a variety of classes for groups or individuals depending on the clients needs.

First our Assistive Technology instructor will complete an evaluation and demonstration with each client prior to class enrollment.  This process will help us establish an appropriate lesson plan for each client.

Knowledge of the computer keyboard is essential to your success. 
Talking Typer, our keyboarding skills class, is a prerequisite for any of our computer training courses.

Courses Include:

ZoomText:
ZoomText is a large print magnification program with speech capabilities for low vision clients. ZoomText offers a variety of visual enhancements, including contrast variations, in order to enhance computer usage with less strain.

J.A.W.S:
J.A.W.S stands for Job Access With Speech. This is a screen reader program for the blind. It also operates with other basic software packages. JAWS can be used to create and read documents in conjunction with a word processing program. It can also be used to send and receive emails as well as search and surf the internet.

Computer Skills:
This course is offered for high functioning individuals that need minimal enhancements. Students will be taught how to adjust settings, such as screen resolutions, font type and size, mouse pointer enlargements and more.

Microsoft Office Training:

  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook
  • Word
  • Internet Explorer and email suites like Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, etc.

In addition to these Adaptive Software programs we also offer a wide range of Assistive Technology, including:

The Breeze:
Is a portable scan and read system that coverts text into speech with the use of your computer. The program also allows you to adjust the font size with keyboard shortcuts, change color contrasts, and save text as an mp3 or text file.

S.A.R.A:
S.A.R.A stands for Scan and Reading Appliance. This device enables low vision and blind individuals to see and hear their printed materials, such as personal mail, bills, newspapers and more. It also has the ability to play Daisy Talking books, or any other CD media for your personal enjoyment.
