Art Department

The art program at the Visually Impaired Persons Center is unique. The vast majority of artists had no painting experience before losing their vision. Some artist’s use their window of vision with resource material to create their artwork. Others paint from their minds eye.

Many of our artists have their paintings in local, national and corporate collections

We are proud to note that many of our clients have become artists and won fabulous awards. This includes the American Printing House for the Blind annual competition; the cover of the APH annual report; the cover of the APH Annual 2004 calendar and Lee Memorial Hospital/Arts In Healthcare calendar contest.

Please View our Gallery from our Art Extraordinaire Program. These paintings were created by VIP clients:

The Painting class is looking for artists to enter the juried Art show “Aquarium" at the Cape Coral Art Studio. If interested in submitting your art, please contact the VIP Center (239) 997-7797. The Art show "Aquarium" will start displaying on August 31, 2007. The Cape Coral Arts studio is located at 4533 Coronado Pkwy., Cape Coral, Fl.

VIP Center's Art Program teaches Tactile painting. The purpose for the tactile painting is the show the VIP Artist to paint by feeling the art. Using a plat knife, a molding past is put on to a canvas for the artist to feel the painting. The past should be applied thick. The thicker the past the better the artist can feel the painting.

Art Curriculum teaches on the premise of "Back to Basis". The purpose of the Back to Basics class is to give VIP clients some of the terminology that is used in class. Proper use of bushes and tools will be taught.

The curriculum encompasses the "Definition of Mediums". Types of brushes, composition of brushes how to select the right style and size of brush, and different strokes are taught to achieve desired effects. "Basic Shapes" teaches shapes, how to determine shadows and highlights will also be discussed. The Color Wheel lesson teaches the VIP Client basic color mixing through use of the color wheel by creating their own color wheel.
