Low Vision

The Low Vision Department at the VIP Center offers a variety of services to the individual with varying degrees of vision loss. We offer  exams with a low vision optometrist,
assistive low vision screenings,  eccentric viewing training classes,  and a large assortment of magnification devices including state of the art electronic devices.

Dr. Kaplin, our Low Vision Doctor, comes to the VIP Center, offering low vision evaluations to the patient, desiring an examination by a low vision specialist. For more information please call (239) 997-7797 and ask for Dianne.

For the individual who needs low vision magnification devices we offer assistive screenings to help the individual select magnification devices best suited to his/her needs. From reading glasses, hand held illuminated or non-illuminated magnifiers, to Closed Circuit Televisions, the VIP Center has the most current, up to assistive technology available. Come in, compare and evaluate different brands, types and models in a relaxed environment. Appointment required.

We offer an Eccentric Viewing Training course to help the individual with central vision loss use remaining residual vision to optimal capacity. This class, taught by individuals who also are considered “legally blind” due to macular degeneration, shows the client how to “find his/her window”, (the area in the periphery which is clearest) allowing the individual to see an object more clearly. Through a series of exercises and techniques taught in this class, the student will enhance his/her reading ability, and maximize use of remaining residual vision. This course runs for eight weeks, two and one half hours per day, one day a week. For more details call (239) 997-7797.

Staff in the low vision department has received extensive training in the field of low vision, keeping up with standards set by the National Accreditation Counsel
