Activities of Daily Living

Welcome to the Daily Living Program area of the Visually Impaired Persons of Southwest Florida Rehabilitation Center or the VIP Center! We are the “low tech” portion of the training you can receive here and we pride ourselves in our group sessions and our relaxed yet focused atmosphere. “Low tech” being relatively inexpensive solutions based on common-sense for making life more livable despite visual impairment.

When people are dealing with the frustrations of visual impairment, it is comforting to be able to spend time with other people with similar eye conditions and share the problems and the SOLUTIONS for those frustrations. As you advance through the sessions you will have ample opportunity for individual attention within the class setting or in private sessions if you choose.

Most of the clients who take advantage of our Independent Living Skills services are folks who are not going back to work, who appreciate the group setting. If you are in a hurry and need specific skills to help get ready to return to the main stream and the world of work, we can modify a program to meet your specific needs and speed you through an individualized course.

So what do we actually teach?

Independent Living Skills involves learning new techniques for daily living tasks, handling money, safely preparing simple meals, labeling medications, grooming, and getting around in familiar environments. There is also instruction in tips and tools used for managing personal finances, address books and correspondence. Developing or continuing leisure activities and many other topics are also addressed.

Clients learn about many handy devices invented to make living with reduced vision much easier. Coping classes help clients and loved ones through necessary role changes.

A client at her exit interview said “I didn’t know what I didn’t know and I’m so glad I took a chance and came to the Center.” So if you are dealing with a visual impairment and would like to join one of our Independent Living Skills groups to find out what new things you can learn to help you cope, give us a call.
